Privacy isn't as simple as targeted advertising

We are in this generational grey area when it comes to privacy. To the generation before us, privacy was a tangible thing with very defined *physical* boundaries. Your house, for example, is a physical boundary for your privacy. What you audibly tell a neighbor or a grocery store employee is equally tangible and controllable.

We don't live in that world anymore.

Editor's Note: I'm back? Okay, not so much

6 months is a long time. NoMoWaDa started almost exactly 1 year ago and I abandoned it about 6 months ago. I learned that I don't like to write, especially on a deadline. Well, my Squarespace account expired earlier this month and today I decided to renew it. After renewing, I found myself doing a lot of maintenance (damn spammers!) and re-reading some of my articles... I have to say, after taking some time away, I'm actually kind of impressed with what I accomplished over the 6-or-so months. There's a lot of content and, although I have a very defined writing style that isn't technically good, it has been entertaining to read.

So, with that, I think I might write some more. Not every day and definitely without any deadline pressure... but every now and then, I just feel I have something to say.

Homework: Weekly Update

Things I finished this week:

  • 3 (2 repeat, 1 new) Pimsleur Beginning Chinese I Lessons

Ongoing:

  • Tai Chi: I attended both my classes and the supplementary 2-person fighting form class. I've doubled the moves in my sword form.
  • Beginning Chinese I, Lesson 17: Family Pictures
  • Google Reader: No accurate statistics. I have a feeling this will be the case for awhile.
  • CISSP-ISSAP: Continued on with Role-base permissions. Work signed me up for the official ISC2 ISSAP online course. More on that later this month.

Things I' started this week:

  • Nothing new started.

Linkbait: Count me in!

I'm really copping out here, but I'm stretching my patience with the Internet tonight.

I really like this, and if there was anyone who wanted to become part cyborg, it's this guy!

Linkbait: Sim City, Portland

I was going to post my Chinese lesson of the week, but this was too cool to pass up. I am a fan of Freakonomics by the Stevens (Dubner and Levitt). I found it fascinating to see sociology through the eyes of economists. I'm proud to say that Portland has doubled down on this concept.

The program is called System Dynamics for Smarter Cities and it allows city planners to take seemingly uncorrelated urban phenomena and help build models that guide their plans.
